In 1867 Hungary got its own constitution and was ruled jointly by Emperor Franz Joseph with Austria.
A set of stamps was issued for use in both countries before Hungary started its own issues. In 1874 to 1880 this was superseded in Austria by similar issues with distinctly finer detail. These are shown together below to allow comparison between the two main types.
For the coarse printing all 6 low values were perf.9½, with the 50k having perf.12; the fine printing stamps come with a range of different perforations, with the most common being as for the coarse printing. Stamps with traces of the watermark BRIEF-MARKEN are worth significantly more than those without.
